YS-11 aircraft of NAMC

NAMC YS-11 was the first Japanese made twin-turboprop commercial aircraft following the end of second world war. In May of 1957, the Transport Aircraft Design Association (TADA) was created jointly by the Ministry of International Trade and Industry and the established airframe makers for exploitation of an indigenous medium range civil airliner of Japan. The technical comittee of the TADA was formed with participation of many well knwon leading experts of the aviation field in Japan at that time.

The Nihon Aircraft Manufacturing Compny (NAMC) was created from earlier Transport Aircraft Development Association in June 1959, and it began the task of building two prototype YS-11 aircraft. The first of two prototypes made it's maiden flight at Nagoya in August 1962, and the second in December of that year. In August 1964, the production line was established and production aircraft flew in October 1964 for the first time. The inaugural commercial flight were flown along the domestic air route from Tokyo - Tokushima - Kochi in April 1965.

By 1971, over 160 YS-11 aircraft had been deliverd to customers including Toa Aiways which was the first airline to use the YS-11 in 1965. Others are All Nippon, Austral/ALA, China Airlines, Cruzeiro, Filipinas Orient, Korean, LANSA, Olumpic, Piedmont, Southwest, Transair, VASP, Air Afrique, Merpati Nusantara and Mey-Air. These aircraft have continued in operation well into the 1980s.

The 64-passenger YS-11, Twin-turboprop, short/medium range commercial transport airplane saw 182 units manufactured between its first flight in 1962 and end of production in 1973 by the Nihon Aircraft Manufacturing Co., Ltd. (NAMC, now dissolved). Although the airplane performed well in a technical sense, the venture produced large losses as orders did not materialize as expected.

As of January 1998, 30 years OLD or even older eighty-two YS-11s are still in operation, and forty-three YS-11s were preserved in flyable condition around the world. YS-11s in operation (Japan 60, Philippines 11, Greece 3, Trinidad and Tobago 6, Gambia 1, Myanmar 1). YS-11s in preservation (US 33, Mexico 4, Greece 3, Philippines 1, Gambia 1, St. Martin 1).
